The North Nine (the newest addition to Willowbrook)

1

Terrific opening hole.  Par four, dogleg left, around a lake.  Play three wood right of the fairway bunker, to leave a short-mid iron to green.  Green sits back in a grove of trees, and is guarded by one bunker short left.  Putting green, like all on this nine, is subtle.

2

Nice par three.  Flat from tee to green.  One bunker short right, a second back right.  A ridge bisects the green, elevating the back portion.

3

Perhaps the best public par five in the area.  Reminiscent of the 7th at Byrncliff, except that it is harder.  Ample driving room, with a downhill bounce for the longer hitters.  Then the decision to lay up or go for the green in two.  The lay-up must be made to a narrow portion of the fairway, made even narrower by a hump of rough in the middle of the fairway.  The green sits on the far side of the brook that meanders throughout the course, and is not a tremendously deep green.  In addition, the creek lurks behind the green as well, so lay up and hit a short iron in.

4

The tee ball is played to a slightly elevated green.  The green is protected by bunkers, and is a demon to putt.  A la Alister MacKenzie, the green slopes up to a crown, then drops off a good three feet to a back tier.  Pin position determines the par for this short hole.

5

A terrific long par four.  Similar to the fifth at Niagara Falls CC.  OB right, and the marsh pond to the left make a straight drive and approach critical.  The green is wide and deep, so easy to hit, but harder to putt.  Play it as a 4.5, and be happy with bogey.

6

This hole requires a good bit of thought.  A drive left is wet.  A drive right finds tree trouble as the fairway runs out at the dogleg.  The ideal position is slightly right of the fairway bunker, so hit 3 wood or a long iron, and take a short iron in.  The green employs subtle breaks and a few guardian bunkers to protect par.

7

A tee ball requiring all of your courage.  Played over the brook, downhill to an uphill fairway, you must hit the ball pretty hard to clear the brook.  The approach is uphill to a crescent moon green with a bunker short left.  A high approach is required to hold the green.  Aim for the front right, depending on a lag putt or chip to get close for par.

8

The ultimate strategy hole.  The fairway narrows as the green approaches, with trees blocking an approach from the right, and a marsh pond to the left.  3 wood or long iron to this downhill fairway leave a short iron or wedge to the green.  Take one club less, as anything long creates a difficult recovery situation.  The green is less threatening than its predecessors, and presents a real opportunity for a one putt.

9

A wonderful finishing hole.  Drive up the fairway, to the left of the driving range.  Lay up down the left of the fairway, to avoid trees right.  The green sits on a bit of a peninsula with the clubhouse lake to the left and behind.  Miss short again, and avoid trouble behind.
